I believe that the Apple TV is one of Apple’s most underrated products in the enterprise and retail. For IT teams it is a surprisingly powerful tool for conference rooms, retail displays, training spaces, and digital signage. It is easy to manage remotely, incredibly stable, and fits right into the same device management and deployment workflows that IT teams already use for Macs, iPads, and iPhones. For the price, you get a lot of capability. Yet Apple TV still has not reached its full potential inside the enterprise because it is missing one thing that would make it dramatically easier to deploy at scale: Power over Ethernet.

HomeKit Weekly: Homey’s new Matter Bridge app brings more smart home gear into HomeKit

作者 Bradley C
2025年12月13日 03:17

If you have been in the smart home world for any length of time, you may have some older gear that doesn’t support Matter, such as older Zigbee sensors, Z-Wave thermostats, and IR remotes for ceiling fans, etc. They all work fine, but they live outside your HomeKit setup. That is why this new update from Homey caught my attention. They are rolling out a new Matter Bridge app for Homey Pro and Homey Pro mini, and it gives HomeKit users a way to pull a huge range of non-Matter accessories right into the Home app as if they were native devices.

Today, Homey has announced the new Homey Pro 2026, and the big update is straightforward: more RAM at the same price point. If you are not already familiar with Homey Pro, it is one of the most interesting home hubs on the market. It supports Matter, Thread, Zigbee, Z Wave, Wi-Fi, and even IR devices together so you can manage your entire home from one place. For people who want a hub that talks to everything and does almost all of its processing locally, Homey Pro has become a really cool option.

I love smart plugs for smart home automations. Smart plugs are one of the easiest ways to start building out a smart home without overwhelming someone. They are easy to install, use, and are usually low-cost. Today, Shelly has released the new Shelly Plug Gen4. Big point up front: it works with Matter, and it’s under $20. For HomeKit users, it is an easy way to add automations, track power usage, and control lamps or small appliances directly from the Home app.

Travel chargers are often a series of compromises. They are either too big, too slow, or missing support for one of the devices you actually needed to charge. The Satechi OntheGo 3-in-1 Qi2 charger is the rare accessory that gets almost everything right (except for one thing). It delivers 15-watt Qi2 fast charging for the iPhone, supports fast charging on the Apple Watch, and has a dedicated spot for AirPods. In my time with managing Apple devices in the enterprise, macOS has always been known for its reliability in terms of not getting to a state where it can’t boot, but even the most stable systems have the occasional bad day due to a software update issue, etc. With macOS 26, Apple introduced Recovery Assistant, a built-in utility designed to help when that happens. Instead of forcing users to boot into recovery mode and guess at what went wrong, Recovery Assistant automatically launches when the Mac fails to start, diagnoses the problem, and tries to fix it.

HomeKit Weekly: Hands on with Level Lock Pro and why it sets a new standard for HomeKit and Matter smart locks

作者 Bradley C
2025年12月6日 03:30

Level has been building smart locks that feel like they were made for Apple users since the very beginning, and the new Level Lock Pro might be its most exciting upgrade yet. I have been testing it ahead of my full hands-on review, and it is clear that this is the direction smart locks need to go. Home key support is still the gold standard for Apple users, and Matter over Thread brings the speed and reliability that make it work extremely well with your daily schedule.

MagSafe Monday: This new hub is basically a Swiss Army knife for your iPhone or Mac

作者 Bradley C
2025年12月2日 06:27

There has always been this tension with Apple’s devices. Some people want no ports, and some people want them all. I can argue both sides, but the trend is clearly moving toward fewer ports. Satechi’s new MagSafe 7-in-1 hub is one of the first accessories I have used that actually fills that gap in a smart way. It gives the iPhone some of the flexibility of a Mac without adding much clutter or complexity, but can also serve as a portable hub for your Mac as well.

With the new version 3.0, SupportApp undergoes a major redesign for macOS 26 (Liquid Glass), features improved accessibility, and introduces a new Configurator Mode that enables IT to build and test configurations directly within the app.

I believe Apple’s rise as the preferred device for IT teams comes from its focused approach to solving real problems first, then building the tools that make it easy for companies to connect their entire stack and have everything just work. While some companies in years past built their ecosystems around lock in and doing everything, Apple built its enterprise strategy around integration. The new collaboration between JumpCloud and Google Workspace is the latest reminder that the future of enterprise IT is not about competition. It is about cooperation for the customer, even when you compete at the same time.

HomeKit Weekly: SwitchBot’s new Matter floor lamp brings vibrant colors in a sleek design

作者 Bradley C
2025年11月22日 03:00

As I reported a few weeks ago, SwitchBot keeps expanding its lineup of Matter-enabled devices, and this week I’ve been using the new SwitchBot Smart RGBICWW Floor Lamp. If you want a smart lamp that’s bright enough for daily use but flexible enough to create ambiance, this one has worked great thus far. It connects directly to HomeKit through Matter, eliminating the need for a hub outside of a HomeKit hub. It can produce up to 1200 lumens of light and supports warm white, cool white, and full-color modes.

When it comes to travel chargers that charge all of your gear (sans a laptop), I’ve tried a ton over the years, and most have some kind of downside with either size or power. The ESR CryoBoost Foldable 3-in-1 Magnetic Charging Station might finally be the one that solves all of my charging annoyances without any real drawbacks that I can see. It’s compact enough to toss in a crossbody, delivers 25W Qi2.2 fast charging with active cooling, and charges your iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods at the same time. If you travel often or just want to simplify your daily charging setup, this might be one of the top 3-in-1 chargers on the market.

Managed Apple Accounts are quickly becoming the foundation of Apple devices at work, and if your organization has not rolled them out yet, it’s a project worthy of your team’s attention heading into 2026. Back in my long-retired K-12 tech-focused days in 2012, Fraser Speirs and I talked at length about how identity management was the problem to solve in a cloud and multi-device world. Apple’s managed identity system has quietly become one of the most important parts of its enterprise story. What started as a way to manage App Store accounts for students and employees has evolved into a secure, scalable identity layer that connects everything in the Apple ecosystem with the tools IT already uses.
