iOS 27 fixes Liquid Glass, and not just with a slider

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月13日 00:00

In asking one big question and highlighting 11 key features about iOS 27, I said that the Liquid Glass debate was over. Apple introduced a slider that enables everyone to choose their exact desired degree of transparency, including effectively switching off the effect altogether.

But in running the developer beta on my main iPhone with the Liquid Glass effect maxed out, I’d now argue that the company has done far more than this …

Apple again warns developers not to do what Apple did in macOS 26 Tahoe

The menu icons in macOS 26 Tahoe were roundly criticized for being both ugly and making Macs harder to use. A software engineer pointed out that Apple warned against this very mistake in guidelines published way back in 1992, and the company is now reiterating that decades-old advice as developers get to try macOS 27 Golden Gate

Siri AI is powered by Gemini models, but is not Gemini – what does that mean?

2026年6月11日 20:11

We know that Siri AI and other Apple Intelligence features are powered by Google’s Gemini models, but Apple has been at pains to point out that this is not the same as running Gemini on iPhone.

While there are still some unknowns, a far clearer picture is emerging about exactly what all of this means …

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月11日 19:15

Kindles have long offered a recap feature intended to act like the “Previously …” feature often seen on TV shows. It’s intended to remind you of a book’s story and characters when restarting reading after a lengthy gap.

Amazon last year announced a far more sophisticated Story So Far version, and the feature is now finally rolling out to Kindles and the iPhone app in the US …

The head of London’s Metropolitan Police has described how the service is working with Apple to tackle iPhone theft.

It’s not just Apple – WhatsApp has to allow competing AIs too

作者 Ben Lovejoy

One controversy to mar the launch of Siri AI was the news that it will not as yet be available within EU countries.

The EU told Apple that it would have to allow third-party AI providers to offer similar functionality on iPhones, and the company has responded by withholding an EU launch for now. We’re now learning that Meta’s WhatsApp is being faced with a similar demand …

Siri demos in keynote were a little slow, but that’s good-ish news

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月10日 19:53

A number of people have been complaining that the new Siri demos during the keynote videos were a little on the slow side. There were notable lags of several seconds between Siri requests and the task being carried out.

But while the ideal we’re aiming for is for AI tasks to be carried out as quickly as possible, what we saw is kind of good news …

AAPL stock slides, but is it a reaction to AI announcements?

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月10日 19:07

There’s been an unusually large drop in the price of AAPL stock so far this week, losing roughly $25 per share in the two days since the WWDC keynote.

While some are inevitably speculating that investors weren’t impressed by Apple’s AI announcements, there are other factors at play …

Apple’s WWDC keynote was very different, but this will be the new normal

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月9日 22:04

Yesterday’s WWDC 2026 keynote was a very different beast to its predecessors – and not just because the company spent more than ten minutes talking about child safety and screen time in response to growing concerns by regulators.

The structure of the keynote presentation was completely different to what we have seen in the past, but we can expect this to be the new normal …

Apple’s AI announcements: One big question, and 11 key features

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月9日 20:53

Almost two years after Apple first showed off a video promoting the new Siri and lots of exciting new Apple Intelligence features, that future has finally arrived – at least in first beta form.

The company had a lot of ground to make up. Obviously, the test will be how well the new features work in real life usage, but let’s start with what seemed to me to be the most important things the company announced …

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月9日 19:04

Ahead of yesterday’s keynote, we asked you how optimistic you were about what the company was likely to announce. The executive summary was that there was absolutely no consensus.

Votes were split very evenly between very optimistic, somewhat optimistic and not very. So now that you’ve heard what Apple had to say, what were your impressions … ?

If Apple truly does deliver on its new Siri and other Apple Intelligence features, then you’re very likely to want to upgrade to iPadOS 27 if your device supports it.

Apple does aim to provide OS updates for each of its devices for as long as possible, but the demands of the new features mean that only the most recent models will support the upcoming update …

How optimistic are you about today’s new Siri announcements? [Poll]

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月8日 19:45

Top billing in today’s WWDC 2026 keynote will be Apple’s reveal of exactly what we can expect in terms of new Siri features in iOS 27. We know what we should be expecting, but there may be important small-print about limitations and timings.

Clearly things have not gone well to date, but will this be the day when Apple announces a clear turnaround for the checkered history of its revitalized intelligent assistant … ?

There’s a devious new free phone scam, to add to the lengthy list

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月8日 19:01

‘Free phone’ scams are becoming increasingly common, and there’s now a new one to watch out for. With this version, a brand new phone is left on your doorstep and – unusually – the scammer didn’t use your money to buy it.

This is just the latest in a long line of scams involving new phones delivered to your home …

Smart home diary: A fresh look as I start again in my new home

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月6日 00:00

I’ve recently completed what must be a strong contender for the longest-running saga in selling one home and buying another. I won’t bore you with the details, but the entire process from start to finish was two years almost exactly to the day. I have sadly sacrificed my former spectacular city view but let’s just say it was a good move.

I set an ambitious target of a fortnight for completing all the main home improvement work on my new apartment, and so far seem to be getting pretty close. This includes much of my new smart home setup …

I still want an Apple Vision Air but would understand it being low priority

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月4日 21:36

A report a year ago said that we could expect an Apple Vision Air product in the second half of 2027. This was expected to address both of the issues that have led to the Vision Pro being such a niche product.

This week brought two reports suggesting that we may have to wait significantly longer for a Vision Air, if indeed we ever see one at all …

Privacy may still be Apple’s savior when it comes to delayed AI features

作者 Ben Lovejoy
2026年6月4日 19:17

It’s more than 18 months since I wrote an opinion piece suggesting that while the wait for the new Siri is frustrating, the privacy payoff would be worth it.

A lot of time has passed since then, and of course user frustration at the ongoing delay has grown significantly. While goodwill has undoubtedly been lost, a recent announcement does provide some hope that privacy may still rescue the company’s tarnished reputation in AI …
