HomeKit Weekly: Why the Eve Aqua is a better choice than a permanent irrigation system

作者 Bradley C

It is spring 2026, and that magical time of year when the sun is shining, the grass is growing, and flowers bloom. We are heading into near-perfect weather. Spring in the southern US generally brings plenty of showers. It will not be long until the brutal summer heat arrives, with 97 degrees, 90% humidity, full sun, and no rain in the forecast.

Winning against the brutal summer heat with your plants requires a strong foundation right now, and getting them plenty of water consistently is the absolute key to survival. I have generally opposed professionally installed irrigation systems due to the upkeep required. I have long used the Eve Aqua instead. It is a great way to quickly deploy a maintenance-free, Apple Home-enabled sprinkler system.

作者 Bradley C

Today, Apple announced a massive shift in how it approaches the enterprise market. On April 14, Apple will merge all of its business and enterprise tools under a single, unified platform simply called Apple Business. The biggest news in this announcement is that the built-in mobile device management features (previously a paid subscription under Apple Business Essentials) will be completely free for organizations in over 200 countries.

Apple takes aim at Google Workspace and Microsoft 365 with new hosted business email

作者 Bradley C

For over a decade, the enterprise email and calendar market has been a two-horse race between Microsoft and Google. If you started a new company, you bought your domain and immediately signed up for either Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace. With the launch of the new Apple Business platform, Apple is officially throwing its hat into the ring to challenge Google and Microsoft with a free business email service.

When we talk about the accelerated growth of the Mac in the enterprise, we usually bring up how Apple Business Manager enabled easy zero-touch deployment or the sheer power of Apple Silicon, creating an incredible user experience, but I firmly believe that one of the key trends paved the way for Apple to take over the corporate world was with with Dropbox shoehorning itself into macOS back in the late 2000s.

HomeKit Weekly: Aqara releases its first Matter camera alongside a new Apple Home enabled wired doorbell

作者 Bradley C

Aqara just announced two major additions to its smart home security lineup today. They have released the Camera Hub G350, which is the company’s first Matter-certified camera, along with the Doorbell Camera G400. I always look forward to seeing what Aqara does next, as they have been a great way to build out a low-cost smart home for years. These two devices bring so many needed features to the Apple Home ecosystem.

MagSafe Monday: Apple FineWoven Wallet review and Find My tracking

作者 Bradley C

Apple’s FineWoven material has gotten a lot of bad rap over the years. People have been incredibly critical of it since it replaced leather in the Apple lineup. This is my first time giving it a go after using the original leather Apple Find My wallet many years ago, and I wanted to see how it holds up for everyday carry. This week, I am taking a look at Apple’s FineWoven iPhone wallet with MagSafe.

For the last decade, the strategy for many IT departments was simple: move everything to the cloud to save on costs. The promise was moving faster, with less downtime and less maintenance, but as we settle into 2026, the reality is looking a bit different for some teams. Parallels has just released its 2026 State of Cloud Computing Survey. The results paint a picture of IT teams slowing down on “cloud at all costs” because they are realizing it’s leading them into vendor lock-in.

HomeKit Weekly: Shelly Gen4 Plug brings Wi-Fi 6, Matter, and Thread to a single smart outlet

作者 Bradley C

Choosing a smart plug usually feels like a gamble on which protocol will win the war. Belkin recently ended support for its Wemo line as well. Shelly has apparently decided to stop gambling and just include everything. I’ve been testing the Shelly Plug US Gen4, and it’s great! It supports Matter, Bluetooth, Zigbee, and, in a rare move for a smart home device, Wi-Fi 6. It also includes precise power metering, a feature I think is awesome for a modern smart plug.

MagSafe Monday: LISEN Qi2 3-in-1 is the “one ring” of desk chargers

作者 Bradley C

I like a simple desk setup. The LISEN Qi2 3-in-1 charging station might be the one charger to rule them all if you feel the same. With Qi2 standard support for up to 15-watt fast charging and an Apple-inspired design, it is a perfect companion for anyone all in on MagSafe charging. This is what makes it a great purchase and how it fits nicely with the existing Apple setup.

Apple @ Work: ABMate gives Apple Business Manager the native Mac app it deserves

Apple Business Manager (and Apple School Manager) is the source of truth for Apple device management. If a device isn’t in ABM, it doesn’t really exist for your fleet is concerned. While the web portal has improved over the years, it is still a web portal. It generally takes me longer to log in, approve 2FA, etc., than it does to actually search. This is why I was excited to come across ABMate recently.

HomeKit Weekly: Tired of ugly air purifiers? Smartmi E1 is best looking Apple Home solution

作者 Bradley C

Air purifiers are one of my favorite HomeKit accessories. Even though I live in an area with pretty decent air quality, I keep them running in our home to help clean the air for my family, especially in the spring. The problem is that most of them look like medical equipment. I love the Smartmi E1, and it effectively ends the era of ugly appliances. It is hands-down the best-looking HomeKit/Apple Home air purifier on the market.

If you have walked into a conference room with a MacBook Air in the last five years, you know the struggle. You look for the cable, realize it does not fit your laptop because it’s HDMI, hunt for a USB-C dongle, find one that is broken or doesn’t do the handshake right, and eventually just join the Zoom call from your laptop screen. Owl Labs has been a staple in small conference rooms for a while with their 360-degree cameras. I really saw them take off during COVID and remote work. They look unique, but they solved the camera angle problem of getting everyone on the screen. Recently, they announced the Meeting Owl 5 Pro. While the camera specs are improved, the real upgrade story for Mac users is the connectivity that this new model brings.

HomeKit Weekly: This Matter smart bulb brings lighting control to Apple Home for under $10

作者 Bradley C

I have been a Philips Hue user for a number of years. They are rock solid, but they aren’t cheap. Recently, one of the bulbs in my hallway finally gave up the ghost. Instead of dropping $45 on a replacement, I decided to look at what the “Matter era” has brought to the table in terms of Wi-Fi only bulbs. I found a Matter-native option that costs less than $10 per bulb. It connects directly over Wi-Fi, requires no hub outside of a HomePod/Apple TV, and works with Apple Home right out of the box.
