此次收购将成为亚马逊收购史上的第四大笔交易,次于2017年以137亿美元收购美国有机食品连锁超市全食超市(Whole Foods),今年3月以85亿美元收购好莱坞电影制片公司米高梅(Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer),以及上个月以39亿美元收购医疗保健提供商One Medical。
官网显示,成立于1990年的iRobot是一家美国消费类机器人公司,主打扫地机器人和智能家居设备,目前旗下产品在全球的销量已超过4000万台。旗下产品Roomba?吸尘器连续第8年成为亚马逊Prime Day活动的特色产品。
实际上,这两家公司早有合作。2016年,iRobot将其关键任务型平台迁移到亚马逊AWS服务器上。此外,该公司为产品加入智能化语音功能时选择了亚马逊语音助手Alexa。
目前尚不清楚交易完成并获得监管机构批准后,iRobot将如何与亚马逊合作,但亚马逊打算让科林·安格尔继续担任iRobot的首席执行官。
iRobot创始人兼CEO科林·安格尔(Colin Angle)表示,iRobot成立以来,一直致力于创造实用且新颖的产品,致力于让用户生活得更加轻松。“亚马逊和我们一样,热衷于打造造福用户的新产品,我认为与亚马逊一起是iRobot最好的归宿,在这里能够继续完成我们的使命。成为亚马逊的一员,我非常兴奋,并期待着未来我们能够一起创造什么。”

Apple today premiered Luck, its first feature film released as part of an exclusive deal with Skydance Animation. The multi-year deal will see Skydance produce 3D animated movies and TV shows exclusively for Apple TV+.
Skydance is headed up by long-time Pixar veteran John Lasseter (who left the company a few years ago following incidents of professional misconduct), and has brought many high-profile Pixar producers along for the ride, as they look to recreate the Pixar formulae independent of Disney.

然而,就在同行们都焦头烂额的时候,最近却有一家创业公司逆势拿到了D轮2.6亿美元的融资,估值也从上一轮的15亿美元跳涨2.5倍,增至37亿美元。值得注意的是,它背后的投资方个个都是投资界的“顶流”,包括谷歌Alphabet的独立成长基金、DST GlobaL、A16Z和YC等等。
这家公司名字叫做Whatnot,从2019年成立至今才刚满三年。简单来说,它是一家做直播卖货的公司,但与此同时,它现在所走的商业道路,却也不仅仅就是通过视频卖个货那么简单。
图片来自福布斯从二手转卖起家,直到“小众收藏”遇上视频直播在Whatnot创业之初,其实它们的业务并没有与电商直播有什么直接关联。用它创始人Grant LaFontaine的原话来说,他们一开始是想把Whatnot定位成一个高端的Craigslist转卖平台,用户可以在其中列出他们想要出售的任何东西。
LaFontaine表示他从7岁就开始热衷于收藏和倒卖各种小玩意儿,比如在eBay上卖“神奇宝贝”卡,后来又开始倒卖运动鞋等,另一位创始人Logan Head也跟他有同样的爱好。但从他们的使用体验来看,eBay、Craigslist这样的转售平台越来越老旧,界面简陋难看同时又缺乏安全功能,于是让他们萌生了要做一个新的转售平台的想法。
然而,打破并转变用户习惯并非易事,在LaFontaine2019年从Facebook辞职全心投入Whatnot之后,业务却在之后一段时间里都毫无起色,甚至他们不得不把总部从加州搬到了成本更低的凤凰城。
直到2020年夏天,他们把产品类型缩小并聚焦到了收藏品之上,并开始首次尝试直播,事情才开始出现了转机。
Whatnot最开始聚焦的带有收藏价值的产品叫Funko Pops,这个东西大家可能逛商场的时候都看到过类似盲盒的大头娃娃,其中有一些卡通人物和造型比较稀有,因此也带有一定的收藏属性。
在销售方式上,他们首次以视频直播的方式来尝试销售Funko Pops,结果在那一次短短两个半小时内就售出了价值约 5000 美元的 Funko Pops。
此后几个月,Whatnot的Funko Pops业务开始快速崛起。LaFontaine表示,在推出直播功能后,用户月增长率达到了 120%。而Whatnot也开始在Funko Pops圈子里打出了名声,圈内人都纷纷跑到Whatnot上进行直播展出和寻求交易。同年十月,Whatnot就获得了来自包括YC在内的400万美元种子轮融资。
FunkoPops,图片来自于网络在这一次的成功试验之后,两位创始人意识到,视频直播的形式跟小众收藏品市场似乎有着天然的契合,因为收藏者们都更倾向于全方位了解想要收藏的产品,同时希望能够更便捷、更安全地实现交易,而视频直播的形式无疑丰富和提高了整个流程的效率。
接着,他们开始把产品从Fanko Pops 向更多带有收藏增值属性的各类产品延伸,比如球星卡、稀有玩具、漫画书、球鞋,甚至近期还紧跟潮流引入了NFT。每个用户都可以申请成为直播卖货的博主,同时也引入了更多玩法。
比如除了直接展示产品进行拍卖之外,还允许买家进行预拍“拆盲盒”,由买家买下一个提前不知道的商品,然后在直播中观看主播开封并展示,但往往这些商品会基本持平或者远高于买家的出价。再比如他们设计了Win Grails活动,每周都会空投发放免费的球星卡、玩偶等。
在这些具有吸引力的玩法下,Whatnot逐渐吸引和建立起了一个有关收藏品的忠实买家和卖家社区。经过不到两年的发展,目前在Whatnot平台上,已经拥有了 70 多种收藏品类别。
要探索全新的社交电商形态在一些圈外人看起来,收藏品市场似乎很小众市场不大,但在Whatnot两位创始人眼中,当前的流行文化正在经历一轮“收藏品的复兴”,其市场规模以及后续能带来可挖掘潜力远远超出了大家的想象。
根据安德森霍洛维茨公司发布的“交易平台100强”(Marketplace100)榜单显示,Whatnot在过去两年中一直是美国增长最快的交易平台,去年,该平台上的销售额总体增长了20多倍,2022年以来,单月销售额仍然保持两倍多增长。很多北美知名的球星、明星和博主不仅都成为了Whatnot的用户,甚至有些还从用户变成了它的投资人。
在2020年10月首次获得融资之后,Whatnot的估值开始一路暴涨。2021年3月获得了来自A16Z领投的2000万美元A轮融资;5月获得有YC领投的5000万美元B融资;9月获得CapitalG领投的1.5亿美元C轮融资,估值15亿美元变身独角兽;再到不久前获得2.6亿美元D轮融资,估值涨至37亿美元。
从名不见经传的Fanko Pops转卖平台,到估值37亿美元的资本宠儿,Whatnot仅用了一年多的时间,收藏品市场的火爆从中也可见一斑。
Whatnot 官网与此同时,Whatnot在新一轮融资采访中也强调,他们未来的目标也不仅仅只着眼于收藏品市场,而是以打算收藏品转卖市场为切入口,逐渐扩展自己的边界。
“对于一个初创公司来说,从一两个类别开始总是很重要的,但这并不是一切”,LaFontaine表示,“Whatnot在二手市场目前发展的非常好,未来将会成为‘eBay 2.0’”。
简单来说,Whatnot的目标就是想要以视频直播的形式来取代目前eBay等二手转卖平台,同时在此基础上探索出一种全新的电商社交模式。
Whatnot认为直播购物将彻底颠覆ebay等目前转卖平台单一、无聊的信息呈现形式。而对于目前各种转卖平台上假货泛滥、缺乏监管的问题,Whatnot也设计了一个完备的保障制度。
首先,Whatnot有严格的卖家审核制度,要求卖家必须是有相关领域经验的人,比如漫画书店店主、专搞潮玩搜集的网红、从事相关领域创业的人,目前平台一般只会批准大约30%的申请,新卖家在发布产品之前还要完成一系列的直播销售培训。
而可能大家都想不到的是,根据Whatnot的统计,成功通过申请的卖家平均每月的销售额已经超过了6000 美元。卖家从业余爱好者到专业人士都有,平台上最大的店铺由20到30人在共同运营,相当于是一个小型创业公司。
图片来自Whatnot官网在商业模式上,为了保证平台的可信度和安全性,Whatnot会要求卖家先将收藏品寄给Whatnot,待识别产品真假之后,再将通过认证的产品由Whatnot寄给买家,这个过程中,Whatnot会收取9%的手续费。
除此之外,为了让整个体验更加丰富,Whatnot还在探索除了商品买卖外的更多社交功能,比如最近推出的直发私信、社区文化活动等。希望为藏家们提供一个可以在实时、互动的在线环境,并通过不同的主题社区帮助人们去结识志同道合的朋友。
为不被用户待见的海外直播市场,提供了一个新思路众所周知,虽然直播带货在中国搞得如火如荼,被证明了是一种可行且有巨大潜力的商业模式,但在海外,直播带货却一直走得十分坎坷,国外顾客似乎对此并不买账。
细数下来,这两年来,大部分北美科技巨头都已经涉足了直播带货领域。比如Facebook和Instagram推出了Shops,YouTube在推出的视频购物功能,亚马逊推出的Amazon Live频道,TikTok推出Shop业务等,但至今几乎都没有激起什么水花。最近,TikTok甚至还宣布暂停了包括英国、美国等市场的直播带货业务。
但最近,Whatnot另辟蹊径的直播卖货道路,也让让海外市场看到了电商直播成功的可能性和不同的运营推广道路。
最近两年来,随着Whatnot的成功,市场上也逐渐涌现了一些与Whatnot比较相似的直播电商公司,比如专门卖潮玩的直播平台Popshop,洛杉矶潮流文化直播平台专门NTWRK,卖球星卡的直播平台的Loupe等,这些公司近期都获得了千万级以上的投资,用户增长十分迅速。
球星卡的直播平台的Loupe目前来看,这些全新的直播带货平台都有一些共性,比如都专注于垂直赛道、目标客户都放在更能接受新购物方式的年轻人和潮流人士身上,长期战略都是先从小切口培养客户习惯再往更大的领域拓展。
直播带货此前在海外不太走得通的原因,主要是很多地区的商品市场已经很成熟,消费者并没有、也没有意愿去培养看视频买日常消费品的消费习惯,再加上直播带货本质上也是一个体力活,高投入低收益的工作让卖家很难持续性地做下去。
但潮玩或者收藏品市场过去本来就属于是一个被忽视了的领域,如今很多用户不仅仅把直播当成了一个购买商品的工具,也当成了一个猎奇或者寻找同类的渠道,于是更容易建立起社群、用户粘性也更强。
不过当小圈子内的增长达到饱和之后,以Whatnot为代表的垂直类直播平台究竟能不能真正实现破圈走向更大的消费群体,目前还仍然需要时间和市场的验证。
